Thank you for your interest in the Virtual Reality Room, an immersive photo realistic environment that can be used as a home, a skybox, or even as your own "private world" within Second Life.
Please read carefully the short operating instructions below. They will help you get the most out of your Virtual Reality Room. It contains the following chapters:
1. Package content
2. Requirements
3. Setting up the Virtual Reality Room
4. Changing the scenery
5. Allowing others to change the scenery
6. Finding more scenes
7. Getting in and out the Virtual Reality Room
8. Packing the Virtual Reality Room
9. Moving the Virtual Reality Room
10. Changing the opacity of the central platform
=====================================
1.Package content
The Virtual Reality Room should appear as a folder in your inventory with a name like "Virtual Reality Room 240".
In the folder you'll find:
- This notecard that you're currently reading, called 'READ ME FIRST! - Virtual Reality Room instructions".
- The Virtual Reality Room itself, which should be named just like the folder. Actually that object is only the inner platform from which you will "deploy" the whole room.
- A wearable "HUD" version of the 8 sample environments free with the Virtual Reality Room, called "VRR sampler - WEAR ME"
- A "panel" version of the same 8 environments, called "VRR sampler - Panel".
=====================================
2. Requirements
The Virtual Reality Room currently comes in 6 models, the Virtual Reality Room 210, the Virtual Reality Room 220, the Virtual Reality Room 230, the Virtual Reality Room 240, the Virtual Reality Room 250 and the the Virtual Reality Room 280.
10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 80 refer to the inner size of the room, in meters. Add more or less one meter to get the outer dimension of your room, walls included.
Requirements for the rooms are listed below:
Virtual Reality Room 210: 500L$
- A square area 10.1m x 10.1m
- 7 Prims
Virtual Reality Room 220: 900L$
- A square area 20.1m x 20.1m (404 sqm.)
- 29 Prims
Virtual Reality Room 230: 1200L$
- A square area 31m x 31m (961sqm.)
- 64 Prims
Virtual Reality Room 240: 2000L$
- A square area 41m x 41m or (1681sqm)
- 113 Prims
Virtual Reality Room 250: 3000L$
- A square area 51m x 51m or (2601sqm)
- 176 Prims
Virtual Reality Room 280: 5000L$
- A square area 81m x 81m or (6561sqm)
- 113 Prims (no, that's not a typo ! that room is very low prim !)
=====================================
3. Setting up the Virtual Reality Room
Setting up the Virtual Reality Room is fully automated and done in 3 quick steps:
1/ Drag the object named "Virtual Reality Room 240" (or 220, 230, 250...) from your inventory into the world. It's a circular platform (20m for the 280 model, 10m for the 250 and 240 models, 8m for the 230 model, 6m for the 220).
2/ Move the platform to where you want the centre of the Room to be, both horizontally and vertically. Depending on the model, the clearance you need in each direction from the centre of the platform is listed below:
Virtual Reality Room 280:
40.5m on each side, 37.5m downwards, 43.5m upwards.
Virtual Reality Room 250:
25.5m on each side, 22.5m downwards, 28.5m upwards.
Virtual Reality Room 240:
20.5m on each side, 17.5m downwards, 23.5m upwards.
Virtual Reality Room 230:
15.5m on each side, 13.5m downwards, 17.5m upwards
Virtual Reality Room 220:
10.1m on each side, 8.1m downwards, 12.1m upwards
3/ Step on the platform and just say "unpack". The Virtual Reality Room will build itself around the circular platform, including the transparent floor across its entire surface. I have seen cases where SL "forgets" some pieces in a busy Sim. If that happens, just reissue the "unpack" command: things should be better the second or even the third time around.
=====================================
4. Changing the scenery
To change the scenery in the Virtual Reality Room, just right click the object called "VRR sampler - WEAR ME" and select "wear". Alternately you can just drag it from your inventory onto your avatar.
You should see a panel with 8 vignettes appear to the top left of your screen. Just click any of the pictures to apply the relevant scene to the walls of the Virtual Reality Room.
You're the only person seeing the panel with the 8 pictures, but everyone sees the changes to the room.
=====================================
5. Allowing others to change the scenery
To allow guests to change the scenery, just drop the object called "VRR sampler - panel" in the Virtual Reality Room. Now anyone can click one of the pictures and change the scene.
Note: The panel requires 9 prims to rez properly.
=====================================
6. Finding more scenes
Many more scenes are available at the Virtual Reality Room main shop. As of October 20th 2006, there were a total of 79 scenes in 10 packs (not counting the included ones), with new packs coming monthly.
Look up "VRR" in the SL search menu to get the location of the shop.
=====================================
7. Getting in and out the Virtual Reality Room
To get in the Virtual Reality Room from the outside, just right click one of its wall and select "Get In" from the pie menu. You can also fly in and out through the roof of the room which is phantom (your avatar can go through it freely).
Second Life provides you with many other methods of getting in and out of the Virtual Reality Room beyond those two:
- You can set up "Home" in the Virtual Reality Room by going into the room and then selecting "World/Set home to here" from the main SL menu.
- You can create a Landmark by going into the room and then selecting "World/Create Landmark Here". You can then use the landmark or give it to your friend to get directly into the room. IMPORTANT: You have to set "Teleport Routing" to "Anywhere" in the About Land/Options tab.
- You can also buy one or find for free many teleport systems in SL that will allow you to create access points to and from outside the Virtual Reality Room.
=====================================
8. Packing the Virtual Reality Room
To move the Virtual Reality room from one place to the other, just step on the central platform and say "Pack". The walls will disappear, and the platform will revert to the aspect it had when you first rezzed it in world. You can then safely take it back in your inventory and set it back up anywhere else.
=====================================
9. Moving the Virtual Reality Room
If you want to move the Virtual Reality Room, simply "Pack" it using the method described above, move the platform to its new destination, and say "Unpack"to set it up again.
=====================================
10. Changing the opacity of the central platform
The owner of the Virtual Reality Room can change the opacity of the central platform from invisible to fully opaque just by "touching" it (clicking on it). It will cycle from 100% transparent (invisible) to 0% transparent (opaque) in 10% increments.
